count one's chickens before they are hatched 在小鸡孵出之前计算它们的个数。这隐含著什么意思呢？我们都知道，小鸡是从鸡蛋中孵出来的，如果有五只小鸡，就必定有五只鸡蛋，但反过来说，有五只鸡蛋，却未必有五只小鸡，因为不是每只鸡蛋都能孵出小鸡的。所以，你有几只小鸡，要等真正孵完蛋后才能知晓，在小鸡没有孵出来之前去数小鸡的个数，未免有点过早乐观了。
count one's chickens before they are hatched这个成语多用以劝告对方不要过早乐观，过早地打如意算盘，它通常用否定形式。
例如：
It's quite possible that you will get the job, but don't count your chickens before they are hatched.
你很有可能得到这耕作,但也别过早乐观。
在使用中，before they are hatched可以省略。
例如：
A: I'm sure to win the prize. I'm going to buy a new car with the money.
