Learn about our proud history, our Windsor headquarters and our Canadian facilities

1920s - 1930s

The Chrysler Corporation of Canada Limited was incorporated in Windsor, Ontario, on June 17, 1925, only 11 days after Walter P. Chrysler founded the Chrysler Corporation in Detroit. Chrysler Corporation of Canada was the successor to the former Maxwell-Chalmers Motor Company of Canada.

In its initial year of operation, the new company employed 181 people and built 7857 cars. To officials of the new Corporation, it was apparent that the expanding Canadian vehicle market offered opportunities far beyond the production capacity of the existing plant.

In 1929 the company opened a new passenger car assembly plant on a 70-acre site on the outskirts of Windsor. This was the nucleus of the company's present vehicle assembly complex located on Chrysler Centre - Windsor Assembly Plant.

By this time, Chrysler had absorbed Dodge Bros. (Canada) and Graham Bros. (Canada), car and truck manufacturers respectively. Plymouth and DeSoto passenger car divisions had also been organized, and for the first time the Canadian company was offering, through its dealers, a complete line of passenger cars.

Despite the Depression years, Chrysler Canada continued to grow. The first Dodge trucks were built in Canada in 1931. Fargo trucks were added four years later. In 1938, an engine manufacturing plant was opened adjacent to the passenger car assembly plant in Windsor.
