顺治七年冬天，我从小港想要进入镇海县城，吩咐小书童用木板夹好捆扎了一大叠书跟随着。

这个时候，偏西的太阳已经落山，傍晚的烟雾缠绕在树头上，望望县城还有约摸两里路。趁便问那摆渡的人：“还来得及赶上南门开着吗？”那摆渡的人仔细打量了小书童，回答说：“慢慢地走，城门还会开着，急忙赶路城门就要关上了。”我听了有些动气，认为他在戏弄人。

快步前进刚到半路上，小书童摔了一跤，捆扎的绳子断了，书也散乱了，小书童哭着，没有马上站起来。等到把书理齐捆好，前方的城门已经下了锁了。

我醒悟似地想到那摆渡的人说的话接近哲理。天底下那些因为急躁鲁莽给自己招来失败、弄得昏天黑地到不了目的地的人，大概就像这样的吧，大概就像这样的吧!

来自庄子的逆旅小子

古文：
阳子之宋，宿於逆旅。逆旅人有妾二人，其一人美，其一人恶，恶者贵而美者贱。阳子问其故，逆旅小子对曰：「其美者自美，吾不知其美也；其恶者自恶，吾不知其恶也。」阳子曰：「弟子记之！行贤而去自贤之行，安往而不爱哉！」

白话文：
杨朱路过宋国边境的小旅店时，发现店主有两个妾，一个漂亮一个丑，丑的那个地位高，漂亮的地位低。杨朱觉得奇怪，就问店主原因。店主回答：“漂亮的那个，整天觉得自己了不起，我看着就烦；丑的那个老觉得长得对不起我，我喜欢这种态度，也就不觉得她难看了。”

杨朱听了，很有感触说：“记住了，对别人做了好事，不要因此而改变对人的态度，这样的人，走到哪儿都招人喜欢。”

英译：

Yangzi came to visit Song and lived in a hotel. The owner of the hotel has two cocubines, one is pretty while the other one is quite ugly. But the owner favors the ugly one more than the pretty concubine. Yangzi asked the reason why he liked the ugly one more. He said, "The pretty one is surely pretty, everybody knows; The ugly one is ugly of course, but I don't think that she is ugly. Please remember that you can not change your attitude to someone to whom you have done good deed, if you can act like this you will be love by the people no matter where you visit."
