　　1996年，身为学校同窗的主唱迈克·信田与布莱德·德尔森在迈克的卧室兼迷你录音室录下第一首歌，两人随后在高中结识鼓手罗布·巴登，过了一阵子，迈克与同在帕萨迪纳的艺术中心学院研习绘画的DJ乔·汉搭上线，念加利福尼亚大学洛杉矶分校的布莱德碰巧跟贝斯手菲尼克斯·法雷尔同为住校室友，菲尼克斯曾在大学毕业后曾一度离团，一年后重新归队。当时他们把自己的乐队取名为“Xero”，并录制了几首单曲，但是他们却没有得到任何唱片公司的签约。在乐队面临解散的重要关头，迈克决定刊登广告公开招聘主音歌手。入选者就是来自亚利桑那州的主唱切斯特·本宁顿。这个16岁就开始灌录唱片的家伙的出现吓跑了所有的竞争者，他火暴如炸药般的咆哮，确定了他在乐团中的主唱位置。

　　切斯特·本宁顿加入后，乐团起初希望起名为“混合理论”（原因是他们觉得自己的乐队是摇滚和说唱的混合团体），即他们首张专辑的名字。但后来发现已经有了名为“混合”（Hybrid）的乐团，使得他们只好改名。候选的名字（有严肃的主意也有恶搞）有：“清晰”（Clear）（乐队成员们的最爱），“Probing Lagers”（也是乐队成员们认为最不可能被采用的），“Ten PM Stocker”（因为他们每天都会在Stocker街的录音棚录音到晚上10点）以及“Platinum Lotus Foundation”。最后，他们采纳了本宁顿的提议，将乐队定名为林肯公园（Lincoln Park），因为每天乐队的例行练习结束回家时，他都会驾车路过这里。然而，“lincolnpark.com”这一域名的申请费用远远超出了乐队能够承担的范围，所以他们更改了拼写，最终定名为“Linkin Park”。

　　林肯公园在与独立厂牌签约期间灌录了他们的第一张非正式专辑《混合理论EP》（Hybrid Theory EP），专辑中收录的曲子有《Carousel》、《Technique》、《Step Up》、《And One》、《High Voltage》和《Part of Me》。

　　在1999年与时代华纳下属的wanner兄弟音乐公司签约后，他们在2000年发行了他们的第一张唱片《混合理论》（Hybrid Theory）。这张收录有《One Step Closer》、《Crawling》、《Papercut》、《Points of Authority》等多首热门单曲的专辑成为了2001年美国和新西兰最畅销的唱片。值得注意的是，他们的这张专辑中的歌曲歌词都相当干净，没有任何脏话出现，这与其他的一些新金属乐队的歌曲形成了鲜明的对比。

　　林肯公园在2001年与玛丽莲·曼森（Marilyn Manson）、Slipknot、Crazy Town、Papa Roach和Disturbed等乐队一起参加了奥兹·奥斯本（Ozzie Osburne）组织的Ozzfest巡演。之后林肯公园也组织起了自己的定期巡演——“Projekt: Revolution”。在“Projekt: Revolution”中除了他们自己，还有Cypress Hill、Adema、DJ Z-Trip、Xzibit、Mudvayne和Blindside等乐队捧场。
