Going Dutch or Paying Your Way
Traveling independently and paying your own way guarantees that you are under no obligation to the other person. Traveling independently is easy, paying less so. Waving your money around at box offices and in restaurants isn’t very tactful way of saying you’d like to go Dutch. Until you know each other better and can sort out who pays for what and when, you may have to play it by ear and wait until you can do it unobtrusively, or pay your way by reciprocal hospitality. Some men may be very put out by offers of going Dutch. Equally, some women may be very embarrassed if the man always insists on paying.
If a friend organizes tickets for a concert or the theatre remember to pay them. It can be very difficult for them to ask you for the money. If you are given hospitality at a friend’s house but you don’t cook, repay them by taking them out to a meal or to the theatre. Nothing is more irritating than a friend who always seems to arrive in the pub just as a round has been bought and doesn’t offer to buy another until drinking-up time.
