Schumacher ignites F1 fever in Shanghai

ONLY Michael Schumacher and red-hot Ferrari could give China a real thrill for Shanghai’s inaugural Formula One event, which starts at 2 p.m. Sunday.

“King of racing comes!” reads the headline of a local newspaper Wednesday, referring to Schumacher’s secret arrival Tuesday.

Then he made his first public appearance in Shanghai at a press conference Wednesday, after keeping local media and fans guessing. The number of reporters and photographers attending the conference, the first held by Ferrari since its arrival, was strictly limited by organizers to avoid turmoil.

“It’s not really a surprise to see so much support from Chinese fans. The Formula One championships is a worldwide event and also popular here in terms of television viewers,” Schumacher said.

Questions raised ranged from the red color of Ferrari to Schumacher’s retirement intentions.

“I don’t even want to talk about retirement,” the 35-year-old German said.

“I thought in 2002 that it was difficult to improve from there but we’ve managed to do even better this year,” he said. “So why not keep going to see if we can make further improvements next season or beyond.”

Schumacher has racked up 12 trophies out of the 15 Grand Prix races this season and secured the annual drivers’ title, seventh in his career, in Belgium late last month with four races left on the 18-leg calendar.

In 2002, Schumacher snared 11 wins in 17 starts.

The efforts by Schumacher and his teammate Rubens Barrichello, now a distant second in the drivers’ standings, had already crowned the Ferrari team as the annual constructors’ championship winner even one race earlier in Hungary.

“I don’t know much about motor racing, but Schumacher is a big name,” said Ning Xiaolin, a 19-year-old student in Shanghai.

She was happy to see him in person but was disappointed not to get his autograph.
