Abstract: It is generally held by in the academic circles that the stories narrated in the book The Popular Historical Romance of the Three Kingdoms were the creation of many people, but the final written text was produced by a single person. However, there has a controversy over the completion time of the book. The present article is a reexamination of this issue from the perspective of propagation, and has come to the following conclusion: the completion of the written version is a process which started from the end of the Yuan Dynasty and ended by the first year of Jiajing Emperor when the book was finally published.
