instead （副词）代替：取代先前提到的某物；作为替代品或等同物。
从意思上说，在句子中，两者意义相同，只是所在的位置不同。
*instead单独存在时，其前放代替去做的事情，如：
Having planned to drive, we walked instead.
我们以步行代替原先计划的驾车

*instead of 后面通常接被替代的对象（代替的事、人、物在前面，同上）
I will go instead of you.
我代你去。

实际上，"of ..."是对instead的补充说明。
如
I will go instead（of you）.
我代替（你）去。

instead 的意思是1.作为替代. 2.反而,却.
例如 He is tired,let me go instead. 他累了,让我去吧.
instead of 的意思是代替,而不是…
例如 He will go instead of you.他将代你去。

意思相同 但词性和所充当的成分不同
instead of 介词词组 后边接名词或充当名词成分的词
instead 副词 通常位于句末
试比较 (1)He will attend the meeting instead of me .
(2)I won't attend the meeting, he will go instead.
类似的还有in case of 和in case 万一 ，假使
前者是介词 后者副词

instead是副词，instead of相当于副词和介词。
例句：ordered chicken instead of fish.
点了鸡而不是鱼
If you cannot go, let him go instead.
如果你不能去，让他替你去。

instead of 放在句中，instead 一般放在句末，试比较：
Let's go instead.
Let's go instead of living here.
