Student B:
Currently, the sporting industry is paying ridiculous salaries to its athletes. The enormous wages that sports stars of today are getting encourage fans to pay too much attention to this industry, which is bad for society. Athletes don't deserve and aren't worth the excessive amount of money they are paid. I have heard people defend athletes by saying, "If he can get that much money, then good for him, he's worth it." That seems so ridiculous to me. Is Michael Jordan greater because he can score a basket than a doctor is for saving someone's life? How can you begin to compare that? Yet athletes are paid much more than doctors or professors who make a much bigger difference in the important parts of society. Even politicians, who are not always looked upon as admirable individuals, make more important decisions that affect many more people than athletes. A wrong decision by the president could mean the downfall of the country. Other governmental figures face decisions every day that actually mean something. An athlete's biggest decision is whether he should live dangerously and go for the win, or play it safely and settle for the tie. Yet congressmen, senators, federal justices, and even the president do not make the money that professional athletes make. Is this right?

Student C:
Sports have taken on a large role in today's society. Sports provide exercise and keep people active, along with a bunch of other things the people who make Nike commercials want you to believe. "If I play sports, I am less likely to do drugs," or, "If I play sports, I am less likely to be violent," are a few of the slogans. The "sports are life" idea has been spreading over. Many people, including sports fans, say athletes deserve high salaries. Because:
• Sports fans are willing to pay increasingly higher ticket prices and watch TV sports events in large numbers. That means more money is going to the teams.
• There are only a few of these superstar athletes, and the fans’ demand for them is high. The demand raises the price of athletes’ services.
• Some also say that athletes are paid fairly when compared with others in the entertainment industry. It is not unusual for movie stars to make between $15 million and $20 million per movie.
• Top athletes believe they are worth a lot of money because they make millions of dollars for team owners. The team owners make money from ticket sales, television deals, and sales of team T-shirts, caps, and other items. It’s not only sports, it’s an industry.

Student D:
Of course, sports can be a good thing. Sports provide exercise and keep people active, which can be great for keeping youth active, meeting people, and just plain having fun.

However, doesn't it sound ridiculous when people spend a majority of their time and money involved with sports and could care less about major issues facing the nation? The "sports are life" idea has been taken too far, and by too many people. People care more about how their favorite team did last game or what the statistics were on the star player than they care about real issues that are actually important to human life.
It is overwhelming how much sports are pushed and advertised to younger generations. Taking all the intricacies and statistics that sports hold as examples, the important issues of international and domestic affairs are less familiar to youth but no more complex. If equal effort were spent with these issues, people would become experts on a much more important part of society.
