首先，用to play on him是没有错误的。因为I thought后面的从句使用过去将来时would be，而动词不定式在这里就是表示将来的。如果变成你所理解的a trick that was played on him，时态上解释不通。

前面的争论由于时态问题,你老师是对的 ,后面的讨论都离题了,后面那几个短句子,如果要独立理解,都能解释得通,但是放到题目中就不行了.
