Bone formation inside the material interstices of e-PTFE membranes:a light microscopical and histochemical study in man

RESULTS
Many mesenchymal cells and few fibroblasts were
present in almost all membranes: in some cases it was
possible to observe newly formed bone near to the
outer surface of the membrane, and this bone was
surrounded by ALP-positive osteoblasts (Figure 2). No
inflammatory infiltrate was ever present.
In two cases out of ten, it was possible to observe,
inside the membranes, basic-fuchsin positive material
with the same staining features of bone (Figures 3 and
4). This newly formed bone had osteocyte lacunae
(Figure 5). With the histochemical staining for calcium
salts (Von Kossa), it was possible to see that
mineralized bone was present inside the nodes of the
membrane (Figures 6 and 7). In one of the specimens,
this tissue was present for about one-fifth of the
membrane length: it tended to be located in a central
position, and occupied almost the complete thickness
of the membrane material: this newly formed tissue
appeared to be only partially mineralized with Von
Kossa. In the other specimen the tissue was found in
all the membrane thickness, while only one-quarter of
the length of the e-PTFE material was filled: also in
this case the newly formed tissue tended to be located
in a central position (Figure 8). In some areas it was
possible to see that a not yet mineralized material was
interDosed between mineralized bone and the e-PTFE I
material (Figure 9). A few capillaries were present,
almost always in a peripheral location (Figure 10).
