It was difficult raising my two stepchildren, Michael, age nine, and Mimi, age six, after the loss of their mother. They were rambunctious kids, so we worked very hard to make a go of it.
One evening when I returned from work, a broken lamp was lying on the floor with two wide-eyed kids standing over it.
"Who did this?" I asked.
Both immediately denied it.
"One of you did it, and I will tell you what I am going to do about it," I admonished. "Go to your rooms and stay there until the one who did it confesses. And remember, you are making the other one stay in his or her room for something you did."
About five minutes later, Michael came out and said, "Can I talk to you?"
I replied, "Sure, Michael, what's on your mind?"
He reluctantly said, "I want to confess. Mimi did it."
I broke out laughing, and after further reprimands, all was forgiven.
