Life has been pretty good to she and me. We live in a nice little town in the middle of almost nowhere. We own a rental business adjacent to our house, just down the street from the local railroad crossing. If there was one thing about my life that haunted me, it was that crossing. Four years earlier, my brother's 12-year-old grandson Ryan had been killed along that stretch of track. He'd ridden his bicycle across the rails to a convenience store. On the way back, a freight train had sideswiped him. Ryan never saw it coming. I'd been home that day, just yards from where he was killed, and went running when I heard the sirens. But there was nothing I could do. Nothing anybody could do. It broke my heart.
