Back home I couldn't get that picture out of my mind. After about an hour I got into the pickup and went back to the spot, feeling stupid, to be honest. I mean, I'm the kind of guy that hunts deer instead of rescuing them. But the little fellow was still there, almost like he'd been waiting for me. I cut the ignition and got out. The fawn hesitated before taking a step toward me. I stuck out my hand, palm up. He took another step and laid his head right in my hand. And that weird feeling in my chest came back. I bent down and scooped the fawn up. He couldn't have weighed more than four or five pounds.
