1.Sleepless in Seattle
A movie romance usually goes something like this. Boy meets girl. We can plainly see they are made for each other (MFEO) but there is some plot contrivance to keep them apart. Eventually the boy and girl realise they are MFEO, remove all obstacles (such as unwanted fianc閟) and live happily together ever after. Sleepless in Seattle varies the formula by almost delaying the meeting to the last scene of the movie. There is just a brief encounter in the middle of the film.

Sleepless in Seattle retains many elements from the earlier movie When Harry Met Sally, which was a collaborative creative effort between Nora Ephron and Rob Reiner. Ephron takes on the dual role of director and screenwriter for Sleepless in Seattle but Reiner has some input as an actor. The opening music in Sleepless in Seattle is 'As Time Goes By' from Casablanca, a movie which is referenced in When Harry Met Sally.

Again the lead characters are a bright, optimistic female and a darker, pessimistic male. Meg Ryan reprises her role as the leading lady but Billy Crystal is replaced by a younger, taller, more attractive leading man in the form of Tom Hanks.

Again there are references to an old romantic move, this time to An Affair to Remember. It is ironic that Hanks criticises the old movie as being a chick flick.

Again there are Christmas and New Year's Eve scenes. And again the soundtrack uses classic old tunes rather than contemporary songs. Marc Shaiman is the composer again.

There is an implication that some sort of magic is at work during Sleepless in Seattle which allows us to willingly suspend disbelief. I am happy to comply for most of the movie but the break-up scene stretches credibility a bit far. Is it really possible for Ryan to dump her fianc? (Bill Pullman) so painlessly on Valentine's day? Pullman appears to be a good guy whose worst crime is being too dull and predictable. Can Ryan really get away with the "it's not you, it's me" routine?

Sleepless in Seattle could have done something highly unusual if the leading man and lady didn't get to see each other until the last scene. It's a pity that Ephron blew this opportunity in Sleepless in Seattle but it's a good movie regardless. It became the benchmark for the romantic comedy genre in the nineties.

2.The Gods Must Be Crazy (February 6/04)

It's no wonder The Gods Must Be Crazy was a huge hit upon its release some 20 years ago, as the film contains enough elements to please the majority of audiences. The film is jam-packed with moments of physical comedy, romance, and even abrupt violence. It's a bizarre mix that nevertheless manages to entertain, primarily due to writer/director Jamie Uys' obvious enthusiasm for his material.

There's not a single storyline at work here, though the most famous (not to mention effective) remains Xi (N!xau) and his efforts to throw a seemingly demonic coke bottle off the edge of the world. Said bottle has brought his tribe nothing but bad luck, so he's taken it upon himself to extricate the item from their lives the only way he knows how. Meanwhile, romance is in the air for a fetching young teacher (Sandra Prinsloo) and a bumbling scientist (Marius Weyers). The third plot strand, involving an evil revolutionary, is easily the film's weakest - but does serve to unite the other two stories in the movie's last act.

The Gods Must Be Crazy works best during the opening sequences, in which the film apes a documentary - complete with voice over from a stuffy British narrator. It's an intriguing way to introduce the various characters, and nicely sets the absurd tone that follows. The oddly named N!xau, who was actually a bushman when he was cast, proves to be a natural actor, winning us over with his charm and memorable facial expressions (and without speaking a single word of English!)

It's not hard to understand why the film was such a worldwide sensation, as it's entirely possible to watch the movie without understanding any of the dialogue. The Gods Must Be Crazy contains enough moments of physical comedy - along the lines of The Three Stooges or Abbott and Costello - to keep the majority of audiences semi-entertained. While there's no denying that the film is overlong by at least 20 minutes, primarily because of that needlessly violent subplot dealing with the villainous rabble rouser, the easy-going nature of the characters makes it easy enough to overlook such flaws

this is the general description of the movie, maybe it is useful to you.

It's Christmas Eve and radio talk show psychologist Marcia Fieldstone has asked her listening audience what they are wishing and dreaming of during this season of hope. A little boy, who is tuned in from Seattle calls in his wish, a new wife for his father who has been widowed for a year and a half. Meanwhile, all the way across the country, punching buttons on her car radio as she drives from Baltimore to Washington, D.C., Annie Reed hears Jonah and is immediately captivated by him and his selfless Christmas wish. Jonah and his dad are immediately besieged by countless letters from listeners reaching out to help, including thousands of marriage proposals from women across the country. Meanwhile, Annie becomes convinced that it is her destiny to meet Sam, Jonah's lovely dad. And as Annie sees it, there are just two minor problems. First, she is presently engaged to marry another man whom she does love. And, of course, Jonah's dad does not even know yet that he and Annie are made for each other.

推荐(The Gods Must Be Crazy )《上帝也疯狂》这个片子比较精采:)~~

I should say it is one of the most splendid films I’ve ever seen. Comical is the first impression. However, after laughter, we realize that it is not only a comedy.

The story began with the misadventure of Xi (N’gao), a bushman from the African Kalahari Desert. What impressed me deepest is the bushmen’s lifestyle. They lived a primitive life, away from the uproar of the civilized world. Unbelievably, they didn’t have any idea about anger, jealousy, hate and violence. But a coca-cola bottle falling from the sky changed their lives drastically. The bottle was so useful that everybody wanted to own it. The awareness of possession was miserable for them. The discord went on until Xi decided that the damned bottle should be given back to gods.

The film’s second plot is a screwball love story. Andrew stein was an Afrikaans micro-biologist collecting manure for research, while Kate Thompson was a newly-come teacher from a big city. They met, and have experienced both funny and annoying experience. Stein was obviously attached to Miss Thompson. After an accidental episode, he wined Miss Thompson’s heart.

The episode revealed the harsh reality in Africa----the unsteady political environment. Sam Boga’s anti-apartheid forces flubbed an assassination attempt. The terrorists fled towards the Kalahari desert, where they hoped to escape. They took miss Thompson and her students as hostages in order to escape from the government troops.

Finally, Stein and Xi eventually captured Boga and his henchmen. Xi went on his journey and got a cliff, throwing the evil thing----the bottle away. His family reunited again.
