This is not a new insight. It is not the Hawthorne Effect, the finding that the mere act of putting people in a study is sufficient to change their behaviour, since it is not the experimental treatment but genuine education that causes it. Neither is it a John Henry Effect, where the control group population tries and succeeds to beat the experimental effect named after the legendary John Henry, the “steeldrivin’man” who worked himself to death so he would not be replaced by a steam powered spike driver. Some call it the VanderBlij Effect, after the Dutch math professor who delivered remarkably clear lectures. However, students attending his lectures usually received lower grades at the test than those who had not attended his teaching. The latter were forced to study so hard to master the material that they really grasped it. But the effect we are discussing may affect students in both groups.
McLeish stated in 1976 that “irrespective of differences due to the teaching methods used, the work which students do for themselves in preparation for an examination will tend to bring their scores close to equality”. No one should be surprised by this, since we continuously claim that the anticipation of assessment drives learning, more so than classroom teaching.
