INTRODUCTION
Nodal forces are generally assumed in a finite-element analysis. When applied to the analysis of skeletal frames, loads are often applied along the member lengths, but the nodal force assumption is still made in conjunction with lumping of distributed loads at the nodes. For a linear analysis, the bending moment of a one-dimensional member can be obtained by superposition of the nodal moment from computer analysis and the moment diagram of a free member. This superposition technique allows the use of a single element per member in a linear analysis, which leads to much convenience. However, this approach may be inaccurate in a second-order analysis as is demonstrated in this paper.
