After the Battle of Waterloo and the fall of Napoleon, Britain enjoyed a long period of peace, of which the main historical interest lay in the efforts made: (a) to overcome social problems, like those connected with the Industrial Revolution, (b) to make Parliament more representative of the people, and (c) to improve local government and social services.
A lot of reforms were made at that time. There was the prison reform movement, in which modern police force was founded. Trade unions were allowed to develop. A start was made to extend the franchise (i.e. freedom in general elections).
The greatest progress of all was made in the field of communications. Railway networks were developed. Electricity was used, and telegraphy was born, followed later on by the electric telephone, electric lighting, and electric trams.
All these reforms and changes contributed to the prosperity of the Victorian age. The Victorian age was an age of national development and national optimism. The working classes settled down to a period of reasonable stability; the upper and middle classes remained firmly in power, dignified, self-satisfied and very conscious of their own priority. Victorian family life had a similar stability, and the family virtues were part of religion, for Victorians were extremely religious. It was also, in its later stages, an age of imperialism.
