物流中心这个概念最早是由英文词组“Distribution Center”翻译而来，是指接受并处理下游用户的订货信息，对上游供应方的大批量货物进行集中储存、加工等作业，并向下游用户进行分发转运。
现代物流中心都包含货物的存储、运输和配送，一部份物流中心还具有清关功能，在某种程度上，物流中心已经不再是简单的存储和分发的功能，客户更倾向于运输和配送的质量。所以现代物流中心多以“logistics center”命名。
