　　好莱坞的明星多如天上繁星，但历来却只出现过一个正式的电影皇帝，他就是克拉克·盖博(CLARK GABLE)。盖博是由全美洲影迷自由投票选出的好莱坞国王，选票达二百万张之多，加冕典礼于1973年举行，由银色专栏作家艾迪莎利文化代表影迷将皇冠戴在克拉克·盖博头上，后冠则戴在茂娜洛埃头上。如今，茂娜洛埃的名字已没有几个人记得，但克拉克．盖博则一直活在全球影迷心中，堪称实至名归。

　　克拉克盖博1901年2月1日生于美国俄亥俄州加地斯地区，原名比利·盖博。他出生后才10个月，母亲就去世了。父亲先后将他托给祖父母、外祖父母等亲戚家抚养，址到两岁后父亲再婚时，才接回了他。在11岁那年克拉克盖博因家境的变迁，不得不中途缀学。

　　1918年，克拉克盖博离开家到附近的城市去闯荡，一个偶然的机会，他观看了著名话剧《青鸟》，从此爱上了表演，并且常常去剧院当义务报童，有时也跑跑龙套。后来，他不顾父亲的反对，独自四处漂泊，先后干过鞋匠、电工、售货员等十多种职业。

　　1923年，盖博在明星剧团临时客串主角，这使他对自己的表演才能有了信心。不久，他认识长他17岁的百老汇演员约瑟芬·狄伦，并受到她的指导。1914年夏天，他们俩来到好莱坞，并于该年结为夫妻。狄伦替盖博改名为“克拉克盖博”，两人成为了好莱坞历史上最奇异的一对。

　　一开始好莱坞并不接纳盖博，常常嘲笑他“大得像蝙蝠样的耳朵”。饰演了一些小配角后盖博又开始舞台表演，并在休斯顿产生影响。这时电影开始进入了有声时期，盖博流利的英语、英俊的外表，越来越引人注意。

　　1931年，盖博与米高梅签订了为期一年的合同，他拍摄的第一部影片是《彩色的沙漠》，从扮演一个牛仔开始了他的电影生涯，他先后与当时的几位大明星琼克劳馥、嘉宝合作，一年内拍摄了12部影片，如《自由花》、《残花复艳》、《红尘》等，用勤奋和才华在好莱坞站稳了脚跟。1932年，盖博被评为好莱坞十大最卖座的电影演员之一。

　　当时的美国，曾流行过这样一句话：“你以为你是谁？克拉克·盖博？”可见这位巨星在美国的知名度！以至于盖博在影片《乱世佳人》中塑造的白瑞德输给《万世师表》中的罗伯特·唐纳德，而未能获得当年的奥斯卡最佳男主角时，还差点引发影迷和评委的冲突。

　　1933年，一部名叫《一夜风流》的影片，不仅使该片的导演弗兰克·卡普拉一夜之间成了风流人物，而且也让影片的男主角克拉克·盖博和克劳黛·考尔白一夜成名，占尽风流。盖博所扮演的彼得成为影迷崇拜的偶像，人们争相摹仿这个失业记者的打扮，宽外套、V字领衫、宽边帽风靡一时。

　　盖博因为《一夜风流》的成功，首次获得了奥斯卡最佳男主角的称号，这也奥斯卡最佳男主角提名首次授予喜剧片演员。1935年，盖博在耗资200万美元拍摄的《叛舰喋血记》中扮演指挥士兵哗变的英国海军军官，该片当年获得了奥斯卡最佳影片奖，盖博本人也获得最佳男主角提名。

　　1944年7月，战争结束后盖博回到好莱坞，此后虽主演了一些影片但他一直未能从亡妻的痛苦中解脱出来。1960年，盖博主演《不合时宜的人》，影片的女主角是一直崇拜他的好莱坞性感明星梦露，影片刚刚完成，1960年11月16日晚2点15分，60岁的盖博在妻子凯伊怀里离开了人事，盖博去世4个月零4天，他一生中唯一的儿子诞生了。

His mother died when he was seven months old. At sixteen he quit high school, went to work in an Akron tire factory, and decided to become an actor after seeing the play "The Bird of Paradise". He toured in stock companies, worked oil fields and sold ties. In 1924 he reached Hollywood with the help of Portland OR theatre manager Josephine Dillon, who coached and (seventeen years older) married him. After bit parts he returned to theatre, becoming lifelong friends with Lionel Barrymore. After several failed screen tests (Barrymore and Zanuck) he was signed in 1930 by MGM's Irving Thalberg. Joan Crawfordasked for him as co-star in Dance, Fools, Dance(1931) and the public loved him manhandling Norma Shearerin A Free Soul(1931) the same year. His unshaven love-making with braless Jean Harlowin Red Dust(1932) made him MGM's most important star. The studio punished him for refusing an assignment; he was farmed out to Columbia where he won an Oscar for It Happened One Night(1934). He returned to substantial roles at MGM, winning nominations for Fletcher Christian in Mutiny on the Bounty(1935) and Rhett Butler in Gone with the Wind(1939). When his third wife Carole Lombarddied in a plane crash returning from a War Bond drive, a grief-stricken Gable joined the Army Air Corps, out of movies for three years. When he returned the studio regarded his salary as excessive and did not renew his contract. He free-lanced, but his films didn't do well at the boxoffice. He announced during filming of The Misfits(1961) that, for the first time, he was to become a father. Two months later he died of a heart attack. He was laid to rest beside Carole Lombardat Forest Lawn Cemetery.
