I have lived in Canada for about 20 years. When I came here in 1988, I had 2 university degrees, both from Hong Kong. I didn't bring lots of money here, so I started from square one (beginning).

I got my first job within 5 days as a typist with American Express. The income was like 1200 Canada dollars, only sufficient to survive.

In 3 months, I got a job with the government as an entry level policy analyst, making 33,000 a year. I bought a used car (over 10 years old) and a small townhouse (of 120 sq metres).

After 3 years, besides the day job, I got a part time night job to answer emergency phone calls. I kept 2 jobs for about 6 years.

About 9 years after coming to Canada, I got promoted to a mangerial position, making 75,000.

By 16th year, I became a senior manager, equivalent to a vice-president. My salary is 140,000 a year.

Now, I am living in a house of 350 sq meteres, driving a BMW, going to vacation for 6 weeks a year and owing a vacation property in Arizona, USA.

Life is not easy in Canada. You need the following to survive: good English, driving long distance, adjusting to cold weather and most important knowledge of the Canadian culture.

I have seen so many successful immigrants from China. It depends on your determination and patience. If you stay in Canada for one winter and call it the end, Canada will become a bad experience to you.

Take it or leave it. To be or not to be. That's all yours to discover.
