When I tried to install SP2 via Windows Update, the download was
unsuccessful. I got the error code 0x87FF054F. DOes anyone know the problem?

Hello Anthony,

Is this about Windows XP Service Pack 2?
Did the download begin at all?
Look at your Windows folder (usually at C:\Windows or C:\WINNT).
see if you find these 2 files:
Svcpack.log
setupapi.log

If so, attach copies of them into a reply here.

Also, attach an extract of the Windows Update log.
Use Notepad or Wordpad and open & look at the Windows Update log file
C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log or C:\WINNT\WindowsUpdate.log

Scroll down all the way. Get / copy / paste (ideally, put into a file & attach in reply back here) the set of lines for (today's ) the last session.

Yes, this is about Windows XP Service Pack 2. Yes, the download did begin,
but failed due to "an internal error". Should I e-mail you the files?

Hello Anthony,

For now, turn off Automatic Updates.

Do some cleanups & rename the log files.

from main Windows Start menu, select RUN, type in
CMD <Enter-key>

type in
net stop wuauserv <Enter-key>

Go to Windows Explorer.
Look on your system drive (usually C ) and look at the Windows folder name. Like Windows or WINNT.
Modify following as appropriate.
If your Windows folder is C:\Windows. Look at this folder
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

If you find files in there, delete them. That folder is where files are stored from W U downloads.

Rename SetupAPI.log file to something ( setupapiold.log for example).
Ditto Svcpack.log & WindowsUpdate.log (all 3 in 'your' \Windows folder)

Go back to Command prompt window.
type in
EXIT <Enter-key>

Looking at the tail end of Setupapi, it appears the Lexmark USB printer was one problem area. A proper driver for it could not be located.
If you can find the most current driver from the hardware maker, try to update the driver beforehand.

If not, before you begin he attempt to run XP Service Pack 2: use Control Panel to 'logically' remove USB peripheral devices.
Then physically disconnect the devices' cable from the back of your computer. Logoff & reboot system.

Another thing from the log: This system has * Kazaa *on it. Given that Kazaa is an open avenue for malware / infestations, highly urge you to remove it.

Be sure to cleanup all TEMP folders on this system. Be certain to follow preparation & cleanup tips for SP2 (link to Aumha below).

Here is the relevant problem noted in your Windows Update log.

The Error 0x800706ba is listed many times, before the final failure with 0x87ff054f.

The 0x800706ba is due to "WU client fails to call back to install call"

This code points to some issue with the Remote Procedure Call process. Review these Windows services on your system !!

Review Services.msc (Start button > select RUN> type in SERVICES.MSC

The following services are needed by the processes at Windows Update. They must NOT be *Disabled* in the Startup type. They need to show a startup type of Manual or Automatic.
Here are the services & their Startup types:

Background Intelligent Transfer Service(BITS) Manual
Cryptographic Services Automatic
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Automatic
System Restore Service Automatic

Check that.

Follow suggestions on preparing for & getting SP2 as outlined in following at Aumha.org:
Windows Service Pack 2 FAQ at Aumha.org
http://aumha.org/win5/a/sp2faq.htm

*** Get the full-file SP2 (network-install) from MS & follow tips, instead of getting XP SP2 online from Windows Update website.

Needless to say, clean / plan / prepare / watch the whole process.
