Feeling Sorry For Celia is a great book written in a letterform. It is about friendships between the main character Elizabeth Clarry and her friends.
Celia, who was Elizabeth’s best friend, was suddenly missing. Elizabeth was really worried about her and started looking for her. At the same time, she started to write letters to a complete and utter stranger who’s actually a nice girl called Cristina. One day, she received a postcard from Celia and she told Elizabeth that she joined a circus! This is how the story began. Elizabeth and her boyfriend Saxon began to rescue her and they finally took her back. Unfortunately, Celia and Saxon were kind of betrayed Elizabeth since then. They went out together, saw movies together and didn’t really care about Elizabeth anymore. Cristina was still writing letters to Elizabeth and she was still replying. They finally met each other one day and they were still happy to keep writing. At last, Celia and Saxon ran away and Cristina became Elizabeth’s new best friend.
First, I would like to talk about three characters in the book: Elizabeth, Celia and Cristina.
Just like Melina Marchetta said on the back of the book: “Elizabeth Clarry is exactly the sort of person I’d love for a best friend.” This is what I think as well. Elizabeth is a really wonderful girl who’s helpful, unselfish, sincere, kind and always being very nice to people. Although she was always being such a good friend with Celia and Saxon but they betrayed her, she wasn’t really angry with them. She was just so generous to people. If that was me, I guess I won’t just let them go. Anyway, I do like Elizabeth a lot.
I don’t actually like Celia. Elizabeth was so nice to her all the time, did what a best friend always does and was so worried about her when she was missing. But when Celia was rescued back by Elizabeth, she stole her boyfriend. How could she do that? Although she loves Saxon, she should never betray her best friend like this. That’s why I really don’t get why Elizabeth’s feeling sorry for Celia. She shouldn’t! Celia’s the person who should feel sorry for her.
For Cristina, I think she’s a really nice person. She said that she is not a nice private school girl. She doesn’t do homework, doesn’t get good marks at school but I think that this really doesn’t matter. As long as being a good friend and helpful, that’s enough. She tells Elizabeth about her family, her friends and her life and stories. If it was me, I must be really happy if we can write letters to each other.
I really like the way the story was presented. By using a letterform, I felt that I was totally included in the story. I was just like one of the senders and receivers. I especially liked those letters Elizabeth wrote to herself, pretending they were from all those interesting associations and societies, which didn’t even exist. For example: “Society of People who are Definitely Going to Fail High School”, “The Secret and Mysterious Association of Secret and Mysterious People” and so on. These were really funny. I wish that I could receive a letter from them.
I like the theme of this book very much too. It was about friendships, how people treated each other, and some family relationships as well. I learnt from this book that a friend in need is a friend indeed.
The parts which I don’t really like about the book is that I think the story is kind of normal, without many fresh ideas and I don’t like the title because I don’t think it suits the story.
Anyway, I do like this book very much but it’s not perfect.
