陶渊明有两句千古绝唱:‘采菊东篱下,悠然见南山’表达了怡然自适、通达放旷的情趣。

《饮酒》是陶渊明弃官归隐后陆续写成的一组五言古诗，为酒后即兴之作，大多直抒胸臆，挥洒真情，实际上是借“饮酒”的题目，写对世事人生的感慨。这组诗共20首，以这一首的格调最为闲雅有致。

诗人从居住的草庐写起，反思归田后自己的生活状况。他并没有隐居山林岩穴，也没有寄身庙宇不食人间烟火，而是身处“人境”。凡是在有人群的地方，照理也就会有闹市，也就会人来车往，喧嚣不绝于耳，可诗人却说“而无车马喧”。这是为什么呢？第三四句的自问自答揭开了谜底。“问君何能尔”一句转换叙事角度，将抒情主体客体化，仿佛在以第三者的好奇心追问下去，颇富情趣。“心远地自偏”一句，以极为精练的语言，做出了回答：因为心情闲适，心志高远，所以居所也显得偏僻安静。

诗的前四句构成一个意义“方阵”，通过叙事和议论，定下全篇的基调。王安石曾赞赏这四句诗为“奇绝不可及之语”，推崇备至。以下几句主体隐去，进入“写景区”，即王国维在《人间词话》里所称道的“无我之境”。“采菊东篱下，悠然见南山”是妙手偶得之笔，是在不经意中道出的“绝妙好辞”，可谓浑然天成，不工而工。用王国维的话来说就是“不知何者为我，何者为物”，达到了物我合一的化境。“山气日夕佳，飞鸟相与还”两句，抒情主体又渐渐浮出，写眼前景物，脱口而出，不事雕琢，自有神韵。最后两句，诗人写出了面对良辰美景神往而又迷惘的情形。这里暗用了《庄子·外物篇》的说法：“言者所以在意，得意而忘言。”就是说，再精妙的语言，也不足以传达人们复杂的感受。语言的尽头就是音乐，就是舞蹈，就是无声的沉默。

大家都说陶渊明的这两句诗好，自然也有说不好的。宋蔡正孙在他的《诗林广记》中引《鸡肋集》说：“陶渊明意不在诗，诗以寄其意耳。‘采菊东篱下，悠然见南山’，则既采菊，又望山，意尽于此，无余蕴矣，非渊明意也。‘采菊东篱下，悠然见南山’，则本自采菊，无意望山，适举首而见之，悠然忘情，趣闲而累远。此未可于文字精粗间求之。”
其实要理解这两句之好，还是要读全诗。这首诗有10句，可分作3段读。前4句为一段，是说明他为什么会如此：因为“心远地自偏”。非境之静，乃心静耳。中4句写这个静，这两句便在其中。末二句补了一下，说“此中有真意，欲辩已忘言”。无异是通篇的点睛之笔；显然这里的“悠然”并非什么也没有想，而是有“真意”的，只不过是说来无用，或者招忌，故以“忘言”二字推了开去。
陶渊明隐居，宁可采菊以为食也不愿为了那五斗俸禄而去折腰事人，并非是他不想从事政治，只不过那并不是自己心目中的“桃花源”。所以这里难言的“真意”，一定是有所指谓的。而今对于古籍的解读，由于有了考古对地下资料的发现，许多旧有的结论被推翻了。沈从文先生在他的《文物识小录》中，考证到所谓“商山四皓”其实乃“南山四皓”之笔误。那么陶渊明在东篱采菊之时，抑或“悠然”地想起了“南山四皓”，这倒正好和鲁迅先生说的他另一面“刑天舞干戚，猛志固常在”的人格完全一致起来了。
只是这一来，陶渊明就不那么冲淡了。我倒是觉得，虽不合作于乱世却仍以国是为心的陶渊明更可亲可爱！
