楼主的问题让我有机会全面思考了这两词的区别。这区别用举例是无法说明的。我想第一：turn in包含了hand in的意思。turn in的4个常见释意中，第一个就是：Hand in, give over, as in I turned in my exam and left the room. 内中包括了hand in.所以楼主所问的这两个词在这点上是一样的意思。
第二，turn in 还有其他三个意思，是hand in所没有的：

Meaning #1: to surrender someone or something to another(同hand in)
Meaning #2: make an entrance by turning from a road
Meaning #3: carry out, as of performances: "They turned in a splendid effort"
Meaning #4: go to bed in order to sleep

有点区别,但也有相同之处.

turn in:
1)to give back sth that you no longer need:把你不再需要的东西还回/交回
You must turn in your pass when you leave the building.
离开此楼时请务必将通行证交回来.
2)(especially AmE) to give sth to sb in authority:主要用于美国英语:将某物交给上级(部门)
They turned in a petition with 80000 signatures.他们呈送了一份80000多人签名的情愿书.
Only a few guns have been turned in so far.到目前为止只有少数的枪支交上来了.
I haven't even turned in Monday's work yet.我星期一的作业都还没有交.

hand in:to give sth to a person in authority, especially a piece of work or sth that is lost将某东西交给有权人士,特别是作业/任务或失物. 注意:有权人士翻译得不是很到位,,管你的人都算在内才对.这儿应该包括老师.
例:You must all hand in your papers by the end of next week. 你们必须在下周末前都把论文交上来.
I handed the watch in to the police.我把手表交给了警察.

3 to achieve a score, performance, profit, etc:
The champion turned in a superb performance to retain her title.
turn in on yourself to become too concerned with your own problems and stop communicating with others
turn off | turn off sth [nopassive] to leave a road in order to travel on another:
Is this where we turn off? * The jet began to turn off the main runway.
turn off (informal) to stop listening to or
