THE GROWTH OF THE RETAILER
In the late 1800s John Wanamaker revolutionized retailing. Before the Civil War there were no set prices for merchandise sold in retail outlets. As a result, store owners bartered and changed prices depending on the perceived wealth of the customer being served or on their own need for cash that day. Wanamaker, who owned a dry-goods store in Philadelphia, changed this tradition by standardizing the prices on all the merchandise he sold. Furthermore, he established even greater credibility by offering a money-back guarantee. This strategy of honest dealings and straight talk was so successful that Wanamaker built two more outlets and the huge Philadelphia Grand Depot department store.
Wanamaker also hired the first well-known copywriter, John E. Powers. In 1880 Powers was hired to communicate Wanamaker’s philosophy to the public. Power “journalized” advertising by writing ads that were newsy and informationally accurate. He also made the ad more up to date with new copy every day. “My discovery,” as Power explained it, was to “print the news of the store.” With Power’s assistance, the sales volume in Wanamaker’s stores doubled in just a few years.
