Computer communications are at the heart of the technology which makes our environment safer, more productive and more intelligible. The range of applications for which they can be used is potentially unlimited: wherever the fast, reliable, transmission of potentially large amounts of data is an issue it is likely that a computer communications system is playing a decisive role. On successful completion of your course, you will be able to respond to the needs of industry and society and contribute to the development of computer communications systems.

This subject area spans a family of technologies and processes that underlie computer-to-computer communications. These range from microwave, radio-frequency and optical transmission technologies to the design of communication devices for use in the new mobile internet era.

From the outset you will begin to develop subject-specific skills and understanding. Generous hands-on experience in using routers, transmission systems and network applications and tools is provided wherever appropriate to allow you to develop a range of skills needed by professional practitioners in the area.

The main aims of our courses are to enable you to approach the design, implementation and testing of computer communication systems with both confidence and competence so that you can enter your chosen career on a competitive footing.
